For immediate release:
The Office of Naval
Research has awarded Industrial Planning Technology a Small Business Innovation
Research grant to develop software tools for simulation based design for
producability.

Design for producability
is the key to reducing ship construction costs. The most direct way to ensure
that design for producability goals are met is to automate portions of the
design process, enforcing producability requirements in an automated process.
Industrial Planning Technology Inc has developed an automated design and
planning technology, SmartPlan-Ships™, that is based on the use of
high fidelity fabrication and assembly simulators. This technology yields lower
construction costs than traditional rule-based design for producability, and
does not require the development of comprehensive design rules. This technology
was developed in conjunction with Northrop Grumman Newport News Shipbuilding and
a working prototype is currently in testing on CVN-21.
After
optimizing assembly and fabrication strategies the next most critical system
design in shipbuilding is the
distribution systems (piping, cabling, HVAC). These systems can represent
between 25% and 40% of the construction cost for Naval ships. SmartRoute™is
focused on developing an automatic design for producability tool, which couples
an automatic 3D spatial router for ship piping, cabling, and HVAC with
Industrial Planning Technology's construction planning and simulation tools.
The benefits of this approach are lower construction cost through optimized
design for producability, and reduced design costs.
This new innovative technology will
use accurate models of shipbuilding fabrication processes so that optimal designs/plans
can be generated for shop production. In addition to the construction
cost savings, use of the Industrial Planning Technology software tools will
enable a substantial reduction in planning man-hours. The technology is
designed to be integrated into existing commercial
CAD/CAM and planning systems.
